2021 Native American Heritage Month Event at College of Western Idaho – Nampa, ID

KIYE Staff Daniel Spaulding and Tom Williamson were invited by Javier Garcia, Latinx Student Services Coordinator to present at the first ever Native American Heritage Month event at the College of Western Idaho in Nampa, Idaho.

The event opened up with Nez Perce Tribal Executive Committee Member Casey Mitchell doing the land acknowledgement and opening remarks.

Tom Williamson, creator of “At The Drum w/ Tommy” and lead singer of Nimiipuu Drum Group Lightning Creek presented on Pow Wow music and the several different styles of songs and dances that you would hear at a Pow Wow. Lightning Creek also performed for the students and allowed the audience to ask questions after.

Daniel Spaulding, KIYE FM Radio Coordinator and creator of “The Conversation w/ Daniel” was the Keynote and presented on Indigenous Representation in Media. Daniel touched on the harmful stereotypes Indigenous people face in the media and why representation matters.

At the end of the event Daniel and Tom had a Q&A where they opened the mic for the audience to ask any questions regarding the presentations and Nimiipuu culture.
